The Lionesses

As the football season kicked off, I was thinking of the analogies and comparisons of a Football Team to Software Engineering.

Well done to the Lionesses on their victory at the weekend and making it through to the World Cup Semi Final — the whole country will be cheering them on this coming Wednesday, I am sure. Except for those that call themselves Australians of course, but we can’t hold that against them.

The Premier League season also kicked off, so I was sat on Sunday night thinking of analogies and comparisons of a Football team to the dynamics of Software Engineering. As lazy as it would be to regurgitate the same material, here are some of my thoughts as I was watching the Lionesses, Match of the Day, and to a lesser extent my hometown club Leeds United.

My position was always Left Back, with the occasional foray into Centre Midfield. Two different roles in both function and vision.

A lot of the play we see on the pitch has been drilled through repetition in training — some long-term core competencies and some tailored to the specific challenges of the match ahead — the flow of passes as the ball moves between players, the movements and the one-twos, who the Left Back will pass inside into, when to play balls into the channel, and so on.
